Obituary for Charles Robinson

Charles Robinson, 82, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, Iowa.

Charles Edward Robinson was born on January 9, 1936, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Charles Harold and Esther Wilhelmina Christina (Anderson) Robinson. He grew up in LA and graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School in 1954. Following graduation, he worked as a carpenter and did other various handyman jobs. After meeting his future wife at a wedding, he made the move to New Orleans to get to know her better. On September 5, 1970, he was united in marriage to Janice Maxine Strand. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Eva and Amy. While living in New Orleans, Charles worked as a maintenance foreman on the levy board. In 1977, the family moved to Atlantic, Iowa, to be closer to Janice’s mom who was in failing health. He continued working in carpentry and doing various electrician jobs in Atlantic. After a few years the family received the devastating news that Janice had ovarian cancer and after a long courageous battle passed away on July 14, 1988, leaving behind her husband and girls who were 11 and 13, at the time. Following her death Charles persevered and raised his daughters as a single dad; something they always admired him for.

He was an avid woodworker crafting bookshelves and stools for his daughters, carved wooden spoons and chainlink. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles. He is remembered as a quiet, hard-working man.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Eva Robinson of Atlantic and Amy Haight and her daughter, Meghan of Marshalltown; mother, Esther Robinson of Apache Junction, AZ, and sister, Marion Whedon of Apache Junction, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice and father, Charles.

Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, with Pastor Ken Davidson officiating. Burial will be in Southlawn Memory Gardens in Atlantic.
