Robert “Bob” Miller, 89, of Greenfield, Iowa, died Friday, June 2, 2023 at the Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Robert Leroy Miller, the son of Thomas and Florence (Whitmore) Miller was born on March 14, 1934, in Colfax, Iowa. Robert attended school in Colfax and thereafter enlisted in the United States Army for three years, 13 months of which was served in Korea.
After his return from military service, he married Sonja Samson of Prairie City, Iowa. The wedding ceremony was officiated by his grandfather, Pastor Floyd Whitmore of Runnells, Iowa. To this union one daughter, Julie was born.
In 1965, Robert graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge and was assigned as an Iowa State Trooper in Greenfield. After 25 years on the patrol, he served as Chief of Police in Greenfield for seven years.
Along with his law enforcement duties, he found time to take up flying and ultimately achieved his private, commercial, instrument and flight instructor ratings. In 1978, after living in Greenfield for 13 years the family moved seven miles east of Greenfield on a 90-acre farm. They lived there for 30 years and operated a small zoo open to the public for eight years. In 2009, they moved to an acreage east of Greenfield. He was always grateful to have such a long and pleasant retirement. He especially enjoyed rides on his 1940 Farmall.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sonja Miller, daughter, Julie (Brian) Farley; granddaughters, Amy (Tim) Bengard and Sara (Paul) Wood; great-grandchildren, Gavin Bengard and Riley and Brady Wood; and sister, Wilma Hawkins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Florence Miller; brother, Thomas Miller; and brother-in-law, Earl Hawkins.
Per his request cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
