Rickey Lee Meyer

Rickey Lee Meyer, 68, of Atlantic, died Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at his home in Atlantic.

Rickey was born on December 22, 1955 to Duane and Cora (Chapman) Meyer in Atlantic, Iowa.  He grew up in Lewis with his brother, Raymond, and sister, Connie.  He and his brother were on the go day and night and were very hard to keep track of.  In fact, they would sneak out of the house whenever possible and would walk clear through Lewis, hiking to the lake to swim – even in the night.  Their sneaking out was only diminished after his Dad decided to nail their second story window shut with 16 penny nails!  Rickey’s mischievous, ornery behavior subsided slightly after he started to work for a local Dairy farmer while attending high school in Griswold where he graduated in 1974.  After graduation, Rickey became a construction worker for Gus Construction in Casey, and Henningsen Construction for the remainder of his career, which concluded in 2019.

Rickey was devoted to his family, never failing to attend large, annual Chapman family reunions, savoring a few priceless hours with his nieces and nephews.  He spent most of each year on the road with his construction crew.  Rickey worked hard and played hard.  Competitive pool and darts at The Fireside Lounge, The Office and in statewide competitions were some of his favorite pastimes.  When at home, he was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, college and pro football fan - especially the Los Angeles Rams.

He always had a grin on his face and loved to tease others.  In his later years, he was often quoted as saying, “if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying”.  His grin and appreciation for family will not be forgotten any time soon.

He is survived by his brother, Raymond (Dawn) Meyer of Atlantic; brother-in-law, Mike Collins of Atlantic; aunt, Betty Chapman of Massena, Iowa; niece, Wendy (Jeremy) Schneider; nephews, Bryan (Kristin) Stanley, Michael (Jodi) Stanley, Nathan Stanley, Matthew Stanley, Travis (April) Meyer, Christopher Meyer; three great-nieces; five great-nephews; many beloved cousins, friends and fellow pool and dart competitors.

Rickey is preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Cora (Chapman) Meyer, grandparents, and sister, Connie Collins.
