Obituary for
Duane A. Reed
Duane Alford Reed, 87, of Atlantic, passed away early Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
The son of Frank Alford and Cecile Marie (Mailander) Reed, he was born April 9, 1930, in Wiota, Iowa. Growing up in the Wiota area, he graduated from the Wiota High School in 1949. Duane enlisted in the U.S. Navy September 29, 1950. After serving in the Korean Conflict as Radio Man, he was honorably discharged, July 23, 1954, receiving a medal, as well. He was united in marriage to Norma Jean (Uhl) Ronfeldt, November 24, 1987, in her son's home in Anita. They lived in Atlantic and he moved to the Allen House in 2016. He worked for Hjortshoj Service Station and Nelson Automotive in Atlantic and then was an ag salesman for 27 years, working for Schildberg in Atlantic, Iowa; retiring December 31, 1993.
A member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, he served as an usher. He also held memberships with the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Nishna Hills Golf Course. Duane was often found on the course or playing pitch in the club house. He was a Hawkeye fan and especially loved watching them play basketball. A special highlight took place in June of 2014 as he was able to travel with many local U.S. Veterans, on the Cass County Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Family was his great love and he will be remembered as a caring man. One of his thrills was fishing and when he could get grandkids on the adventure with him, it was much better! As a couple, he and Norma enjoyed traveling together and participated in many bus excursions and cruises.
Duane is survived by his wife, Norma of Atlantic; three brothers, Howard Reed of Council Bluffs, IA, Dick Reed of Lake Havasu, AZ and Lloyd (Wanda) Reed of Atlantic; two sisters, Benita Rasmussen and Marlene Anderson both of Atlantic; step son, Tim (Becky) Ronfeldt of Anita; four grandchildren, Mindi Ronfeldt of Iowa City, Mandi Ronfeldt of Anita, Nickales Hamilton of Omaha and Orion Hamilton of Des Moines; three great grandchildren, Aidan, Kambry and Rylynn; brother-in-law, Wilfred (Betty) Uhl of Smithland, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Cecile Reed; an infant brother; two step-daughters, Tammy Ronfeldt- Hamilton and Terri Ronfeldt; sister-in-law, Lucille Reed; brothers-in-law, Russell Rasmussen and Ralph Anderson.
