Arleen Ethel Rathman
Arleen Ethel Rathman, 89, of Cumberland, Iowa passed away Friday evening, July 6, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.The daughter of Emery and Edna (Humphrey) Oler, Arleen was born March 28, 1912, in Marne, Iowa. She graduated from the Wiota High School and was later united in marriage to Walter H. Rathman on June 14, 1934. They lived in Cumberland, Iowa all their married life in the same house built in 1893 They later remodeled it themselves. Walter was a carpenter by trade and passed away April 8, 1994 after 60 years of marriage. Arlene was an expert seamstress and did dressmaking all her life. She then branched into upholstering and stripping and refinished antique pieces. She always had to stay busy with a project and in her 80s, turned to making comforters and rugs, which she sold at her annual yard sales at her home. She and Walter felt their hobbies of carpentry, upholstery and refinishing furniture made their later years a sharing experience. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and will be buried by her husband in the cemetery located there.Surviving are her son Paul Rathman and his wife Rosie of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her daughter Ruth Johnson and her husband Carl of Omaha, Nebraska; her grandchildren, David Johnson and his wife Dawn and Debbie Kort and her husband Chris; her great-grandchildren, Sarah and Emily Kort all of Omaha; her sister, Elsie Bailey and husband Kermit of Anita; her sisters in-law, Ruth Oler of Atlantic and Marie Rathman of Anita; and a number of nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband along with two sisters, Laura Rathman and Lillian Cude and a brother, John Oler.Funeral InformationServices for Arleen were held Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at 2:00PM at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Wiota, Iowa with Pastor Ted Weishaupt officiating.
