DONALD "DON" PRALL
Donald "Don" D. Prall, age 82, passed away unexpectedly at his home south of Atlantic, Iowa on Sunday, December 1, 2013.
Don was born to Arch Deo and Mary Rohwer Prall on April 7, 1931 in Cass County, on the family farm where he lived his entire life. He attended school in Atlantic where he graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1949. Don was on the 1948 Atlantic football team which a local journalist/historian has reported to be the best team Atlantic ever had. He also played on the Lyman Town and Elk Horn Legion baseball teams. After graduation, Don entered the Coast Guard where he served on Wake Island. He was offered a pitching contract with the St. Louis Browns but turned it down to come back to Atlantic and marry Marilyn and continue farming and raising Salers Cattle on the land that would become a century farm. On March 8, 1959, Don was united in marriage to Marilyn Annette Myers at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic.
For over 50 years, Don and Marilyn enjoyed playing Pinochle with seven other couples who had married and raised families with them. He was a family man through and through and dearly loved his children & grandchildren. Don loved gospel music, especially The Gaithers and was listening to them every time the kids called home. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and grew the church community garden on his land. He was an avid genealogist and member of the Cass County Genealogical Society. He was a member of the Masons, Pymosa Lodge No. 271 and the Order of the Eastern Star. He also had a wood lathe and made many beautiful household items and gifts. Don loved to fish and also loved the St. Louis Cardinals!
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; a son Alan (Cheryl) Prall and children, Jonathan of Iowa City, IA, Beth of Winona Lake, IN and Michaela of Dallas Center, IA; a daughter Pam (Randy) Wurster of Sioux City, IA and family Kelsey and Ashley also of Sioux City; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marcy and Ron Helms of Newton, IA; four nieces and nephews, Nancy (Hans) Neumann & family of Boulder, CO, Mary (Gary) Henry and son of Dallas, TX, Tom (Patty) Wright and family of the Minneapolis, MN area, and Joel Wright of Newton, IA; and a special cousin, Janice (Carl) Tidgren of Camdenton, MO.
