Obituary for Janet L. Polkingharn

Janet Lucille Stillian Polkingharn, 76, of Marne, Iowa, went peacefully to Heaven, with her family by her side, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic on May 14, 2014.

The daughter of Harold and Nellie (Gunther) Stillian, she was born on August 1, 1937, in Atlantic, Iowa. She was the third born of five children, which included, Gene, Donna, Yvonne and Albert.

After living in Atlantic until she was five years old, the family moved to Marne, Iowa, and this remained Janet's wonderful home for the rest of her life.

Janet attended grade school at the Marne Independent School and graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1955. On March 9, 1956, she was united in marriage to Clarence (Ken) Polkingharn at the Marne Methodist Church. Janet and Ken were blessed with two daughters, Sherie Cutler and Linda Johnson.

She worked at the Western Popcorn Co. after graduation and later worked at Spurgeon's Dept. Store for 25 years where she was the bookkeeper. She was a wonderful homemaker, seamstress, decorator, cook and baker. The job she cherished most was being a Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.

Janet attended and loved the Marne Methodist Church. She served the Lord all of her life. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also loved to help with many events at the church during her lifetime. Many of those gatherings included food, where she shared her wonderful talent of cooking and baking.

Left behind until they meet again in Heaven are her family members: her husband of 58 years, Clarence (Ken) Polkingharn; her daughters, Sherie Cutler and her husband, Collins and Linda Johnson and her husband, John. Her adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Erik and Rachel Johnson and their children, Isaac, Noah and Abraham; Emily and Eric Huddleson and their son, Noah Samuel; Haley and Casey Pelzer and their daughters, Gracey and Nelley; Laura and Jesse Robinson and their sons, Quincy and Lane; Samuel Cutler; Jeremiah Johnson and his special friend, Gabrielle Petersen. She is also survived by her sister, Yvonne Nucaro and her husband, Jim; her brother, Albert Stillian; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Nellie Stillian; her brother, Gene; her sister, Donna; and her parents-in-law, Doug and Leila Polkingharn.

Committal services will be held in the Brighton Township Cemetery in Marne, Iowa.
