Obituary for Lyle Wendell Pigg

Lyle Wendell Pigg of Atlantic passed away on Wednesday, May 29th, 2013 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Helen R. Pigg on December 24, 2012.

He was born in Atlantic IA on March 22, 1921 and lived his entire life in Atlantic except for a year prior to WWII when he worked for the Iowa State Guard at the Ordinance Plant in Ankeny IA. Lyle then served for 16 months with the US Marine Corp First Division in the Pacific in WWII where he was in the initial invasion of Okinawa on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945.

After Okinawa was captured from the Japanese, Lyle and his unit spent four months with US Occupation Forces in North China to assist the Nationalist Chinese Armies in reasserting its control of the nation in the face of anarchy and civil war and in repatriating the Japanese military.

Lyle graduated from Atlantic High School. After the war he worked a year for Hedges Cleaners, a year for Sears Roebuck & Co., five years for Bell Cleaners, and 25 years for Albertson Cleaners. From 1976 until he retired in 1989 he worked as custodian for Atlantic Public Schools and substituted in that position for several years thereafter.

He was a lifelong and active member of First Congregational Church and its successor, The United Church of Christ, was a past member of Atlantic VFW, and was a long-time Mason at Pymosa Lodge No. 271 in Atlantic.

Lyle is survived by his seven children: Ronald Pigg (Betty Delavan) of Omaha, Nancy Pigg Rhiner (Ralph) of Cedar Rapids, Connie Pigg D’Alessandro (John) of Orland Park IL, Roger Pigg (Susan) of Bettendorf, Rodney Pigg (LaVonna) of Sun City AZ, Robin Pigg (Misty) of Mooresville NC, and Janet Pigg Adams of Atlantic.

Lyle's grandchildren are Deborah Rhiner Armstrong (Mark), Denette Rhiner Haines (Greg), Derrin Pigg (Aleaza), Dana Pigg Fields (Steven), Derek D'Alessandro, Jeff D'Alessandro, Christine Pigg, Laura Pigg Denton (Rob), Jennifer Pigg, Justin Pigg (Heather), Ryan Pigg Jeambey, Ross Pigg Jeambey, Austin Pigg, Katie Pigg, Aaron Adams (Jamie), Brian Garrison, and his step-grandson is Brad Kussatz (Amanda). He is further survived by 16 great-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren.

He is also survived by cousins Sara Jane Whitcomb Kane (Art) of Tulsa OK and Frances and Eugenia LeGrande of Winterset IA, sister-in-law Kathryn Jensen Illian (Rev. Donald) of Hudson IA, brother-in-law Edwin Jensen (Sondra) of Atlantic, brother-in-law Burdette Baxter of Atlantic, and by 18 nieces and nephews and their families.

Memorials may be made to the "Helen & Lyle Pigg Scholarship Fund" at Atlantic High School Foundation, PO Box 517, Atlantic IA 50022.
