Phyllis Mewhirter, 99, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024, at Heritage House in Atlantic.
Phyllis Jean was born on May 14, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Benjamin Lars and Gladys Viola (Spieker) Johnson. The family lived in Omaha until moving to Atlantic and later the Lyman area where she attended country school. Phyllis graduated from Atlantic High School in 1943.
On April 16, 1944, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Morris Mewhirter in Lewis, Iowa. In 1946, they moved to a farm south of Atlantic and in 1991 they retired and moved into Atlantic. They enjoyed attending dances, getting together with friends and neighbors, and golf at the Griswold and Atlantic courses. They were blessed with four sons, Roger, James, Richard and Brian. As a family they looked forward to yearly vacations to Spirit Lake. In later years, Phyllis and Morris took many trips to see their children and grandchildren.
In addition to being a homemaker, Phyllis worked at Forum Men’s Clothing Store. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Eastern Star, Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; and the Ideal Neighborhood Club.
Phyllis is survived by her sons, Roger (Corinne) Mewhirter of Las Vegas, NV, Richard (Judy) Mewhirter of Dallas, TX, and Brian (Joan) Mewhirter of Atlantic, IA; grandchildren, Erin (Joseph) Bosse, Gavin (Amy) Mewhirter, Jill Mewhirter, Stacie (Ken) Kritz, Michael (Lorelei) Mewhirter, Amy Mewhirter, Matthew (Brooke) Mewhirter, Travis (Stefany) Mewhirter, Chase (Darien Mills) Mewhirter and Paige (Jose) Perez; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many extended family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Gladys Johnson; husband, Morris; son and daughter-in-law, Jim (Kristine) Mewhirter; grandsons, Brett and Brandon Mewhirter and Kyle Mewhirter; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Kathryn (Merritt) Witzman and Evelyn (Curt) Smith.
A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5th at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Immediately following the service, the family invites you to join them for a time of visitation and lunch in the fellowship hall. A private family inurnment will be held in the Atlantic Cemetery.
The service will be recorded and available underneath Phyllis’ obituary on the funeral home website by end of day Monday, October 7th.
