Obituary for Donald Charles Peterson

Donald C. Peterson (93), Atlantic, IA, went to be with his Heavenly Father on July 9, 2013. Donald was born in Audubon County, IA, on March 4, 1920, and is the son of the late Charles and Floy (Arnold) Peterson. He attended Smokey Hill No. 8 and Atlantic High School where he graduated in 1937.

He was the oldest of four children and helped manage his parent’s farm, seven miles north of Atlantic on Olive Street and a half mile east. He was drafted into the war in 1942 and became a Staff Sergeant with the duties of Survey and Instrument Man and Carbine Sharpshooter. His tour included landing on Utah Beach, with the 692nd Field Artillery Battalion. They went through Northern France and Holland and into Germany. He was part of the Battle of the Bulge. He received three Battle Stars and a citation from the French for helping liberate France.

After his service discharge, he came back home to Atlantic to the farm and went on to meet the love of his life, Arthadell M. Harris. They married in 1946 and loved raising their beloved daughter, Judy Peterson. Donald continued his passion for farming and eventually took over the homestead at the passing of his father. He managed the farm very successfully and lived there till he could no longer physically farm. Arthadell passed in 1999. Eventually, due to health, Donald sold the farm home and buildings and moved to the city of Atlantic where he resided with his granddaughter, Rhonda Hockney. He attended Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of the Brayton American Legion Post 350. During his retirement years Don enjoyed woodworking. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Those left to carry on are his daughter, Judy and her husband George Hockney of Kenosha, WI; granddaughters include Rhonda Hockney of Atlantic, IA, Tricia (Glen) Nelson of Kenosha, WI, Susan (Greg) Russell of Centennial, CO; eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy (Van) Snyder and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Arthadell, his sister Jean (Van) Snyder, and his brother, Howard (Geraldine) Peterson.
