DARLENE PETERSON Darlene Peterson, 89, of Atlantic, Iowa passed away at Colonial Manor in Anita, Iowa on Monday, February 09, 2009. Darlene was born the daughter of Bert and Etta (Abhau) Sunderman on May 31, 1919 in Cass County Iowa. She was raised south of Lyman and attended Atlantic High School where she graduated with the class of 1937. Darlene taught country school north of Atlantic. She was married to Irvin E. Peterson on April 15, 1942 in Maryville, MO. Following their marriage, the couple farmed north of Lorah. They moved southeast of Atlantic, in 1950, where they enjoyed bringing up their son Alan and farming. After Irvin"s death in 1991, she stayed on the farm until she moved to Colonial Manor in Anita in October of 2007. Darlene was a member of Women"s Country Club. She loved gardening, cooking, and visiting. Her door "and kitchen&" were always open to company. Her survivors include her son Alan L. Peterson and wife Diana of Atlantic; two grandchildren, Michael A. Peterson of Maryville, Missouri, and Andrea L. Elba and husband Yaseen of Bloomington, Minnesota; one great grandson Ismael Elba; cousins, Dorothy Sunderman and son Gene Sunderman of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters-in-law, Naomi Best and husband Gene of Brayton and Donna Peterson of Alta, Iowa; nieces and nephews, David Best of Brayton, Steve Best and wife Lynda of Brayton, Cheryl Heudepohl and husband Dave of Williamsburg, Iowa, Karen Stender and husband Dave of Aurelia, Iowa, Nancy Currie and husband Keith of Schaler, Iowa, Connie Rangel and husband Victor of San Antonia, Texas; and a number of great nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, Bert and Etta Sunderman; her step mother Mabel Sunderman and her husband Fred; her husband Irvin; brother-in-law Wayne Peterson; cousin Clifford Sunderman; and nieces Cindy (Best) Fisher and Linda (Hartivsen) Best.Funeral InformationThere will be open visitation and family will meet with friends and relatives from 6:00 to 8:00 on Thursday evening, February 12, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Her funeral will also be held at Roland Funeral Home at 10:30 in the morning on Friday, February 13. Darlene"s family invites friends to join them for a luncheon to be served at the funeral home after the funeral service.
