Obituary for Ruth Petersen

Ruth Petersen, 91, a resident of Atlantic, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at the Heritage House.She was born in Omaha, Nebraska on December 28, 1910 to Frank L. and Adele Johanson. She attended public schools in Omaha, graduating from North High School. After graduation from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas in 1934, she worked as a social worker in Omaha for the Family Welfare Association. She moved to Atlantic following her marriage to Dr. Millard Petersen in 1937.Ruth was an active member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic where she taught Sunday School for many years, and later organized the church library and for 18 years served as librarian. She was a member of the hospital auxiliary, Chapter AF, PEO' the OOP Club, and several card clubs. She also did volunteer work for the Nebraska Federation for the Blind, for whom she taped over 50 books.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1985; a brother Frank Johanson; and a sister Helen Jensen. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth of Anchorage, Alaska, and Daniel and his wife, Lissa, of Claremont, California; two grandsons, Brian and Christopher of Claremont; a sister Bettie Chamberlin of Estes Park, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews, including Kathy Leistad of Elk Horn, Iowa.Roland Funeral Service -- Atlantic, IowaFuneral InformationServices for Ruth will be held on Monday, June 10, 2002 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Bill Emloree of the Exira Lutheran Church officiating.
