Howard C Paulsen
Howard C. Paulsen, a lifelong resident of the Atlantic area, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2014.
The son of Orlie L. and Clara Katrine (Madsen) Paulsen, he was born on the family farm in Brighton Township, north of Atlantic. Howard attended the Brighton Township Country School No.1 and received his diploma from Atlantic High School in 1943. He worked the family farm for 58 years, first from childhood, working alongside his father until he was drafted, and later with his wife. He was drafted in to the U.S. Army, November 16, 1950, during the Korean Conflict, and spent most of his service time in Okinawa. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on October 31, 1952. Howard was united in marriage to Janet Mary Nelson, September 9, 1956, at her family home on Buck Creek Road, also north of Atlantic. They raised their children on the Paulsen Family Farm and Howard retired in 2003.
Howard was a member of the First Baptist Church in Atlantic, and served as a Trustee. He looked forward to attending church and all the activities that were held. He was also a member of the Cass County Farm Bureau; was a Brighton Township Trustee and was chairman of the board for several years; and was part of the Cass County Pork Producers, serving on the Board of Directors for four years. He and Janet thoroughly enjoyed meeting and greeting people at various Farmers' Markets in Atlantic and Audubon. They also exhibited the best of their bounty at the Iowa State Fair for nearly 30 years; winning many awards. He loved following his grandchildren's sporting events and music concerts. Fishing in Minnesota was a great annual highlight and they vacationed at Lake Andrew Resort in Alexandria, Minnesota for over 50 years. He and Janet also, played cards with the same Pinochle group for 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Janet of Atlantic; his son, Thomas (Micki) of Carroll, IA; four grandchildren, Marissa Paulsen of Chicago, IL, Andrew Paulsen of Carroll, IA, Alexander Paulsen of Carroll, IA and Alexa Riggs of Des Moines; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Mary Jo Nelson of rural Atlantic, IA; his son-in-law, Jerry Wallin of Des Moines; and nieces and nephews, Joan (Jerry) Odsather of Porterville, CA, Darryl (Debra) Mickelsen of Austin, MN, Barbara (Larry) Tweedt of Sayre, PA, Janet (Harlan) Petty of Knoxville, IA, Verlee Koskovich of Colorado Springs, CO, Rita (Kevin) Petersen of Missouri Valley, IA, Elaine (Bruce) Kerr of Carlisle, IA, Mark (Teresa) Paulsen of Elk Horn, IA, Jody (Mike) Wohlenhaus of Van Meter, IA and Jeff (Trish) Nelson of Audubon, IA.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Orlie & Clara Paulsen; daughter, Sally Wallin. his sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Lawrence Mickelsen; and his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Elsie Paulsen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, December 22, at the First Baptist Church in Atlantic with Pastor Diane DeSmidt, officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
Family will meet with friends and neighbors, Sunday afternoon, December 21, from 4-6 PM at the Roland Funeral Home.
