Charles Alfred Norman
CHARLES A. NORMAN Charles A. Norman, 89, of Atlantic, passed away at Heritage House on Monday, October 27, 2008. Charles A. Norman was born October 19, 1919 to Charles and Edith Norman in Lafayette, IN. They had lived near Bluffton, IN and also in Crawfordsville, IN before moving to Council Bluffs, IA. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs in 1938. The family moved to Creston, IA where he graduated from Creston Junior College in 1940. On June 14, 1941, he married Ruth Grady in Creston. For over thirty years he was a contract administrator negotiating contracts in the aerospace industry, research and development electronic systems for NASA and the Department of Defense. He served three years in the Iowa National Guard, served in World War II in the Army Air Corps based in Italy as a crew member of a B-24 bomber crew, 15th Air Force, completing fifty combat missions. Later he was recalled in the Korean War to teach navigational mathematics to returning navigators. Later he served in air logistics systems, aerial port group at Nouasser Air Force Base in Casablanca, French Morocco. Mr. Norman was a member of the Atlantic United Church of Christ, a member of American Legion, Post #1 in Denver, CO; a member of NARFE, chapter 2348, in Atlantic and a member of the 459th Bomb Group Association. He moved to Heritage House in Atlantic in October 2005 from Evansville, IN after retiring in San Diego, CA in 1988. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ruth Grady Norman; a sister Rosemary Becker of Atlantic; sister-in-law Margaret Norman of Harlan, IA; sister-in-law Barbara Norman of Atlantic; nine nephews and nieces including Jo Wagner of Atlantic. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Howard Melvin Norman of Harlan and Ralph Sovern Norman of Atlantic.Funeral InformationServices for Charles will be held on Wednesday, October 29, at 2:00 PM at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic with Pastor Nancy Jensen officiating.
