Norma Jean Ronfeldt-Reed, 85, of Atlantic, died Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Heritage House in Atlantic, IA. She was born at home in Grant Township, Monona County, Iowa on March 8, 1939, the daughter of Russell and Florence (Ferdig) Uhl. Norma graduated from Smithland High School in the Class of 1958.
On October 10, 1958, she married her high school sweetheart Eugene Earl Ronfeldt in Rodney, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Tim, Tammy and Terri. In 1963, the family moved to Atlantic when Euguene took a job at Payless Cashways. Norma stayed home to raise her children and after they were older began working at Bowers Bakery, where she greeted and served customers for over 20 years. Eugene and Norma enjoyed working with the community to start Atlantic Little League and time together boating and golfing. Euguene passed away suddenly on April 17, 1984.
On November 24, 1987, she was united in marriage to Duane Alford Reed at her son’s home in Anita. They enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, and traveling, which included several bus trips and cruises. Some of the trips the grandchildren would join and this likely led to them sharing the love to travel.
Norma was a member of the Welcome Wagon, First United Methodist Church, Nishna Hills Golf Club and the Cass Health Auxiliary. She looked forward to getting together with the ladies at the golf course and her grandkids for cards. Norma spent over 2900 hours volunteering with the Cass Health Auxiliary, serving in many roles throughout the years including President. She worked in the gift shop, at the fair booth and each year went with fellow members to Day at The Capital, which was a day they went to discuss healthcare issues with representatives. Her family shared that they will never forget Christmas Eve Bingo and all the effort she put into picking prizes. It was well known that you never questioned where you stood with Norma or how she may have felt about a particular topic. One thing that was a constant in Norma’s life was her love for the Iowa Hawkeyes…FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT FOR IOWA…GO HAWKS!
Norma is survived her son, Tim (Becky) Ronfeldt of Anita; grandchildren, Mindi Ronfeldt of Iowa City, Mandi Ronfeldt of Anita, Nick Hamilton of Omaha, NE and Orion Hamilton of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Kambry; sisters-in-law, Betty Uhl of Mapleton, Jan Uhl of Minneapolis, MN, and Marlene Anderson of Atlantic; brothers-in-law, James (Lila) Ronfeldt of Newton, Ronald (Janet) Ronfeldt of Oto, Steve (Clarissa) Ronfeldt of Smithland, and Dick Reed of Havasu, AZ; and many extended family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Florence Uhl; husbands, Eugene Ronfeldt and Duane Reed; daughters, Tammy Ronfeldt-Hamilton and Terri Ronfeldt; brothers, Wilfred Uhl, Perry Uhl and Ronald (Virginia) Uhl; brothers-in-law, David Ronfeldt, Dennis Ronfeldt; Lloyd (Wanda) Reed, Howard Reed and Ralph Andersen; and sister-in-law, Benita (Russell) Rasmussen.
