Donald Edward Nevins
Donald Edward Nevins, 73, a resident of Atlantic, Iowa, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.The son of John Crotty and Clara "Claire&" (Ferrell) Nevins, he was born February 11, 1929 in Stuart, Iowa. He grew up in the Stuart area and later farmed in the Menlo area. In 1947 he started working for Bell Telephone. Don was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he returned to employment with the telephone company for 38 years, retiring in 1985. He was united in marriage to Inez Maxine Anderson in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Following their marriage, he was transferred by Bell Telephone to several Iowa communities; Manchester, Olwein, Council Bluffs, and Carroll before coming to Atlantic in 1968. He was active with Boy Scouts of America, Handicapped Children, American Legion, B.P.O.E., Eagles and the Knights of Columbus.Don is survived by two daughters, Peggy Peterson and her husband, Randy, of Manson and Connie Nevins of Atlantic; five sons, Donald II and his wife, Nancy, of Atlantic, Richard and his wife, Cindee, of Papillion, Greg and his wife, Jayne, and Jeff and his wife, Joni, both of Council Bluffs and Steve and his wife, Wendy, of Avoca; thirteen grandchildren, Brian, Kevin, Joy, Lindsay, Chase, Dusty, Krissy, Eric, Aaron, Jeanette, Jamie, Ben and Kasie; five great-grandchildren, Korey, Kelsey, Katelyn, Karly and Tyler; five brothers, Martin "Bud&" Nevins and his wife, Helen of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Jim and his wife, Helen, and Joe and his wife, Daisy, both of Stuart, Bernie and his wife, Ginger, of Des Moines and Larry and his wife. Harriet, of Winterset; one sister, Mary Melroy of Des Moines; and a number of nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Inez, and one sister, Patricia Provin.Funeral InformationA funeral mass will be held for Donald on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic with Father John Clark as Celebrant. Interment will be in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery.
