Joyce Nelson

Joyce Nelson, 78, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Friday, October 23, 2020, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Carol Joyce was born on March 6, 1942, in Princeton, Missouri, the daughter of Robert Clarence and Thelma Louise (Shandrew) Sparks. She grew up in Princeton where she exceled in track and basketball. Joyce graduated from Princeton High School in 1960. Following graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, LeeRoy Young and to this union two children were born, Kelly and Kimberly.

In 1978, she moved to Atlantic, Iowa, and married Lenny Hesebeck. In 2002, she married Roger Nelson and the couple looked forward to driving the Jewett in parades. They also enjoyed fishing and being social; whether it be with family or meeting friends at the bar for a drink. They put together countless puzzles through the years. Joyce loved wearing Indian jewelry; never completely ready until she had on pair of dangly earrings. Joyce loved feeding and watching hummingbirds; never using store bought hummingbird food, always making her own at home. Throughout her life she waitressed at many local restaurants including the Wiota Steakhouse and West Side Diner. After she retired no day was complete until she got in an episode of her favorite westerns, The Virginian and Wanted: Dead or Alive. Joyce’s kids will remember her as a good mom, one to not shy away from discipline and how she would dress them to the nines for school. The grandkids will cherish time spent with her looking and eventually finding Waldo.

Joyce is survived by her children, Kelly (Sally) Young and Kimberly Register, all of Atlantic; grandchildren, Zach Watkins, Rob Krisinger, Shea Young, Benton (Emily) Nissen, Beth (Kyle) Welter, Devin Register, and Cheyenne Register; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Dante, Bentley, Keira, Leo, Brayden, Sierra, Monixx, Lucas, Halannah Sue, and Lincoln; sisters, Mae Vanderpool and Helen Anderson; brother, Robert Sparks; and many extended family and friends.
