Fern Nelson
Fern Nelson, passed away at the Exira Care Center. The daughter of K.P. and Martha Hansen, she was born June 5, 1921, in Audubon County. She graduated from Exira High School in 1938. Fern was united in marriage to Don on June 23, 1940, at Brayton. After graduation, and prior to her marriage, Fern worked at J. C. Penny in Atlantic. After her marriage, she moved to Abilene, Kansas where she lived for a year. At the time of her husband's entry into military service, Fern moved to California where she lived for 3 years working for Sears, Roebuck and Company and attending business school. She and Don moved back to Atlantic in 1947 where she continued to reside until she moved to the Care Center in January. She worked as office manager at many establishments in Atlantic, retiring from Allied Engineering in 1980.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was active throughout her life serving more than 40 years as a Sunday School teacher, was president and on the board of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and was a member of the missionary society. Fern also initiated needlework projects for the chancel and baptismal towels, making over 200 herself. For many years she was in charge of scheduling special music.
Fern was a charter member of the Danish Immigrant Museum, which later became the Friends of the Museum organization, in Elk Horn.
Survivors are her daughter Cathy Allen and her husband, David, of Carlsbad, California; her sister, Erma Bro of Exira and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; and brothers Woodrow Hansen of Walnut and Arnold Hansen of Atlantic.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Meyer officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
