Obituary for Carl Eugene Nelson

Carl Eugene Nelson, 67, a resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away late Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.The son of Emil "Bob&" and Louise Alvida (Niles) Nelson, Carl was born June 14, 1934, in Atlantic, Iowa. He grew up in the Atlantic area and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1953. He was united in marriage to Lois Eileen Garside on March 26, 1960 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Carl served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1961. He was in steel construction and worked for 44 years for Ironworkers Local #21, retiring in January of 1990. Carl gave the gift of life as a organ/tissue donor.He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Atlantic; two daughters, Rochelle Plante and husband, Chris, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jana Pettinger and husband, Dave, of Red Oak; five grandchildren, Chrystal Pettinger, Maria Pettinger, Maggie Pettinger, Sophie Pettinger, and Corey Plante; a sister, Diana Marquess, of Orland Park, Kansas; a brother, James Nelson and wife, Joyce, of Underwood, Iowa; four brothers-in-law and three sisters in-law, Lyle Garside and wife, Norma, of Exira, Leo Garside and wife, Elaine, of Atlantic, Lee Garside and wife, Twila, of Adair, Linda Carlson and husband, Darrell, of Atlantic, Laurel Lehman and husband, Robert, of Lewis, Pascal Anderson of Cameron, Missouri, and Jeannie Nelson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and a number of nieces and nephews.Proceeding Carl in death were his parents; a grandson, Colton Coral Plante; a sister, Janice Andersen; and a brother, Ronald Nelson.Funeral InformationFuneral services for Carl will be held at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic on Saturday, March 23, at 10:30 A.M. Rev. Allen D. Hellwege of the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic will officiate. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery with military rites performed by the Atlantic Veterans Color Guard.
