Obituary for Viola M. Myers

Viola Myers Viola Myers died on February 25, 2008 at the Atlantic Hospital as a result of a stroke. Viola Mary Schmitt was born on October 20, 1919 near Mercer, North Dakota, the youngest of six children of Mathias Schmitt and Mary Hobbs. Fourteen years younger than her nearest sibling, Viola was already an aunt when she was born. At the age of 3, she and her family moved to Atlantic. One of Viola"s fondest childhood memories was playing with her neighbor and best friend, Barbara Ann, who had a large playhouse in her yard. Viola graduated from Atlantic High School. During WWII, Viola lived in Tacoma, Washington with her brother Herbert and his family. She was a "Rosie the Riveter&" working in a shipyard where she operated a cutting welder. On February 24, 1946, she married Victor Myers of Avoca, whom she had met shortly before he left for military service. They met on a blind date, which was a double date arranged by the other couple, his cousin Rod Krummel and her niece Eileen. She worked as a housewife during their 50-year marriage, most of which was spent farming near Avoca until 1970 and then near Griswold and Lyman until they retired and moved to Atlantic in 1992. Vic died in 1996. Vic and Viola were active members of the VFW. Viola was a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary (Leuth-Staub Post 4279) in Avoca and participated until her death. After retirement, both were active in the Senior Center in Atlantic. Viola was on the Board of Directors in recent years. In addition to playing cards at the Senior Center, Viola was a member of various card clubs. Both were active in the Democratic party, and Viola continued her participation up to and including the recent presidential caucus. They had many friends, including their "4th of July group&". They made numerous trips to Alaska to see their children and grandchildren, and Viola continued after Vic"s death, logging a total of 22 trips to Alaska. Viola was a member of the First Church of Christ, and enjoyed eating at various restaurants with her friends. Viola was active until her death, and would try to take one day a week "off&" to rest. She was known as "GG&" by her five young great-grandchildren. Viola is survived by her daughters, Carol Myers of Anchorage, Alaska, and Vicki Adams of Atlantic; by two granddaughters, Katie Adams of Sloan, Iowa, and Kristie Adams of Castle Rock, Colorado; by five great grandchildren, Jeremiah and Zachary Adams of Sloan and Christopher, Chloe, and Jessica Negron of Castle Rock; and by Katie"s friend, Chad Choquette, of Sloan; sisters-in-law Janie Myers of Avoca, Martha Peterson of Harlan, and Lillian Schmitt of Little Sioux and brother-in-law James Schueman of Avoca; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Myers; her son-in-law, Verl Adams, Jr., originally of Anita; her half brother Cletus Boring of Wyoming, brother Glenn Schmitt of Marne and his wife Mabel, sister Gertrude (Carlburg Polkinghorn) Bannister of San Diego (formerly of Atlantic and Marne) and her husband Frank, brother Herbert Schmitt of North Dakota, and brother Kenneth Schmitt of Little Sioux.Funeral InformationFuneral services for Viola will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2008, at 1:30 P.M. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa with Pastor Dale Kesterson of the First Church of Christ officiating.
