Obituary for
Gordon "Skip" Meyer
Gordon "Skip" Meyer, 84, of Atlantic, passed away and went to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Cass County Memorial Hospital.
Gordon Frederick was born on April 3, 1931, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Ferne (Kohl) Meyer. He grew up in the Lyman and Cumberland area helping out on the family farm. He attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1950.
Skip married his soul mate, Violet A. Finnell on July 18, 1951, in the Lyman Gospel Hall. The couple lived in the Lyman area where they were blessed with two sons and two daughters. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1995, they moved to Grant, and had lived in Atlantic for the last 4 years.
In addition to farming he mowed the Grant ball field and worked for Moormans and Peet's Feed for 12 years. After his retirement in 1994, he kept himself busy hauling livestock.
He attended the Lyman and Atlantic Gospel Chapel. Skip spread the word of the Lord in a unique way by leaving coins with scripture wherever anyone would possibly see and pick them up. He looked forward to watching "Rejoice in the Lord" on Sunday evenings.
Skip enjoyed camping with his family and frequented the campsites at Green Valley in Creston and Hackleberry in Villisca. He had a love of Farmall tractors and he was determined to come up with a convincing enough excuse to have one, but he always seemed to talk himself out of it. Everyday Skip would meet friends for breakfast at the West Side Diner and looked forward to afternoon coffee at McDonald's and Burger King. He loved doing anything as long as it involved being outdoors, but if inside you could often find him reading his Bible or magazines.
Skip is survived by his two sons, Randy F. Meyer and wife, Lori of Fremont, NE and Duane M. Meyer and wife, Monna of Lohrville, IA; daughters, Suzanne and Ruth Meyer of Atlantic; grandsons, Private Dustin Meyer of Millard, NE, Jesse Meyer and fiancé, Jenny Andrews of Millard, NE, Nicholas Meyer and wife, Jessica and their daughter, Charlie Marie of Fort Dodge, IA, Chad Meyer and wife, Jessica and their children, Carlie, Ashton, Amya and Grayson of Lohrville, IA; brothers-in-law, Walter Finnell (the brother Skip always said he never had) and wife, Norma of Conway, IA and William "Bill" Finnell of Clinton, MO; sisters-in-law, Marion Finnell of Atlantic and Laura Finnell; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Meyer and Ferne Meyer-Matthews; wife, Violet; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanley Finnell and wife Grace, Ivan Finnell and wife, June and second wife, Phyllis, Marvin Finnell, Robert Finnell and wife Maxine, Kenneth Finnell and wife, Ruth, George Finnell, who died in infancy, and Jan Finnell.
