Dean Eldon Meyer
Dean E. Meyer, age 66, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Dean was born September 24, 1944 in Fontanelle, Iowa to Elmer Clarence and Darlene Mae (Murray) Meyer. He graduated from Bridgewater-Fontanelle Community School then attended Universal Trade School. Dean also spent six years in the Army Reserves. He was a farm implement mechanic and was employed at Lindeman Tractor, Inc. until his retirement. On September 14, 1969, Dean was united in marriage to Carol Naomi Mills in Cumberland, Iowa. His interests included his computer, restoring old tractors, trains and fire trucks. Dean enjoyed roller coasters at amusement parks, his 1956 Allis Chalmers tractor, cowboy boots and he had a fondness for beagles. He became sober in August 1991 and remained sober the rest of his life. Dean was a fireman and participated in State Fireman's Convention competitions. He was a cancer survivor for 15 years and enjoyed his trips to Texas and Alabama to visit friends. He also enjoyed going to the zoo. Dean was helpful, knowledgeable and stubborn with a great sense of humor. He loved his family and enjoyed spending the holidays with them. Dean was a member of the Massena United Methodist Church, the Elks, the American Legion and the Iowa Fireman's Association. He is survived by his wife Carol of Atlantic, Iowa; a daughter Cheri Thieleke and husband Jeff of Ames, IA; grandsons, Christopher, Michael and William Thieleke of Ames, IA; his parents Elmer and Darlene Meyer of Greenfield, IA; a sister Diane Darling of Indianola, IA; a brother Gary Meyer and wife Judi of Jewell, IA; brother-in-law Bruce Mills and wife Mary of Blue Rapids, Kansas; two aunts, Ruth Reynek and husband Rich of Omaha, NE and Jeannie Murray of Wichita Falls, TX; cousins, nieces, nephews, other family and a host of friends. Dean was preceded in death by grandparents Elwin and Pearl Murray and Bill and Meta Meyer; father-in-law Charles Mills and mother-in-law Eula Mills; brothers-in-law Steve Darling and Kenneth Mills.Funeral Information There will be an open visitation at the Roland Funeral Home Thursday and Friday, November 11 & 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a family visitation on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services for Dean will be held on Saturday, November 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Massena. Burial will be in the Massena Center Cemetery north of Massena. The Roland Funeral Home is caring for Dean's family and the arrangements.
