Morris Mewhirter

Morris J Mewhirter, 79, of Atlantic, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2001, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.The son of Fay B. and Grace D. Johnson Mewhirter, Morris was born February 11, 1922, north of Atlantic where he grew up and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1940. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Jean Johnson April 16, 1944 in Lewis. Morris worked for the Missouri River Commission in Omaha for three years during World War II. They moved south of Atlantic in 1946 where they farmed. In 1991 they moved into Atlantic. Morris was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic and a past member of BPO Elks.Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Mewhirter of Atlantic; four sons, Roger Mewhirter and his wife Corinne, of Las Vegas, Nevada, James Mewhirter of Las Vegas, Nevada, Richard Mewhirter and his wife, Judy, of Dallas, Texas, and Brian Mewhirter and his wife, Joan, of Atlantic; eleven grandchildren, Erin Funston and her husband, Steve, of Las Vegas Nevada, Gavin Mewhirter and his wife, Amy of Asbury, Iowa, Jill Dickman, Kyle Mewhirter, both of Phoenix, Arizona, Stacie, Michael, Amy and Matthew Mewhirter of Dallas, Texas, and Travis, Chase and Paige Mewhirter of Atlantic; two great-grandchildren, Nicolas Mewhirter and Katlyn Dickman; two sisters, Kathryn Witzman and friend, Bud Woodward, of Atlantic and Evelyn Smith of Strawberry Point, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Brandon and Brett Mewhirter; one daughter-in-law, Kristine Mewhirter; and two brothers-in-law, Curt Smith and Merritt Witzman.Funeral InformationServices for Morris were held Monday, May 21, 2001, at 10:30AM at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa with Reverend Charles J. Downing from the First United Methodist Church officiating.Interment was in the Atlantic Cemetery at Atlantic, Iowa.
