Jim Mewhirter

JAMES LEE MEWHIRTER

James Lee Mewhirter, a life long resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away at his residence in Atlantic on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at the age of 64 years.
Jim was born on January 19, 1947 to Morris J. and Phyllis Jean Johnson Mewhirter in Atlantic, Iowa. He attended school at Atlantic Community Schools graduating with the class of 1965 then he later graduated from Iowa State University.
In 1970, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1975. Jim served in the Philippines and Spain before being discharged. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service. On January 10, 1976, Jim was united in marriage to Kristine Clefisch in Garnavillo, Iowa. They resided in Des Moines where he managed a motel in Clive. Later Jim moved to Iowa City where he managed three motels. He then moved to Las Vegas where he was food and beverage manager at Bally's Hotel. After that he was a real estate agent in Las Vegas. In 2002, Jim returned to Atlantic and held various part time positions. Recently he had been helping his cousin, Joe Mewhirter.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Jill Mewhirter and her two daughters, Katlyn Dickman and Kaylee Mewhirter of Gilbert, AZ; mother, Phyllis Mewhirter of Atlantic and three brothers, Roger (Corinne) Mewhirter of Las Vegas, NV, Richard (Judy) Mewhirter of Dallas, TX and Brian (Joan) Mewhirter of Atlantic; two aunts, Kathryn Witzman of Atlantic and Evelyn Smith of Strawberry Point, IA; nine nieces and nephews, Erin (Steve) Funston, Gavin (Amy) Mewhirter, Stacie (Ken) Kritz, Michael (Lorelei) Mewhirter, Amy Mewhirter, Matthew Mewhirter, Travis Mewhirter and Amy Jo Kern, Chase Mewhirter and Megan Myers, and Paige Mewhirter and Jose Perez; and a number of cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kyle Mewhirter and his father, Morris Mewhirter.
