HERBERT "HERB&" MERTZ Herbert Mertz, age 96, a long time resident of Walnut, Iowa, passed away, June 30, 2008, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa. Herbert was born on April 11, 1912 to Arthur and Marjorie (Drake) Mertz in Walnut, Iowa and lived most of his life in this community. He attended and graduated from the Walnut High School and on August 18, 1935 he was united in marriage to Marie Koll in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He started working at the Walnut State Bank in 1930 and worked there for fifty-three years retiring as president in 1983. He was a member of the Walnut Community Club for over fifty years receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for his services. Herbert also served as treasurer of the Walnut Community School for twenty-four years. His other past activities have included serving as secretary for the Layton Township School District, a charter member of PS Fish & Wildlife Club of Walnut, a member of the Walnut Creek Historical Society, a former member of the Walnut City Council, a past treasurer of the city of Walnut, a member of Peace Haven Association and honorary member of the Peace Haven board of directors, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, a member of the Masonic Lodge and the ZA-GA-ZIG Shriners. He is survived by his wife Marie; a son Donald Mertz and wife Virginia of Yuma, Arizona, a daughter Jean Schmitt and husband Joe of Walnut, Iowa;; one granddaughter Vickie Weihs and husband John of Walnut, Iowa; three great grandchildren, Josie and Drew Cable and Matthew Weihs; seven step grandchildren and a number of great step grandchildren; two brothers, George Mertz of Walnut, Iowa and Laverne Mertz and wife Jeanie of Estes Park Colorado; two sisters, Alice Richter of Walnut, Iowa and Hazel Knouse and husband Rex of Council Bluffs, Iowa and a number of nieces and nephews.Funeral InformationServices for Herb will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 3, at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut with Pastor David Kreuger officiating. Interment will be in the Walnut Cemetery. There will be open visitation with the family meeting with friends on Wednesday evening from 6:30 - 7:30.
