Obituary for Norma Lee McMahon (Shaw)
Norma Lee Shaw McMahon, a long time resident of Atlantic, IA, passed away on June 30, 2013 at the age of 85 years at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA.
Norma was born to Joseph A. Shaw and Jessie May (Lowers) Shaw on March 11, 1928 in Exira, IA. Norma was married to Phillip Michael McMahon in March of 1947. She attended high school in Audubon, IA and later moved to Des Moines for a time. Finally, in 1960, she settled in Atlantic, IA where she lived for over 50 years.
She attended nursing school in Des Moines and later worked in various capacities throughout the medical field. She earned her high school diploma in the early ‘70s and in 1977 acquired her certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She continued her career in healthcare until her retirement in 1997.
Norma enjoyed painting pictures, decorating cakes, collecting clowns and adorning her home with holiday decorations. She thoroughly enjoyed luncheons with friends and spending time with her family. Well-suited to her career in nursing, she demonstrated her compassionate heart through her constant care of friends and family.
Preceeding her in death are both of her parents, three sisters, Evelyn Johnson, Edna Herrick and Nedra Lacy, all of Atlantic, IA; two brothers, Reed Shaw of Charlotte, NC and Gordon Shaw of Des Moines, IA; and a very special friend of 33 years, Morris Levine.
She is survived by her three daughters, Mary (Mike) Knight of Des Moines, IA, Ruth (JR) Richter of Atlantic, IA and Kimberly (Rudy) Noriega of Phoenix, AZ; two brothers, Jerome Shaw of Bothell, WA and Bill (Shirley) Shaw of Audubon, IA; two sisters, Opal Smith of Clarion, IA and Alice (Duane) Brown of Atlantic, IA; four grandchildren, Kristen (Lenny) Yacavonna of Indianola, IA, Lori (Keith) Robson of Linden, IA, Wendy Richter (Tom Cappel) of Atlantic, IA, and Ryan Richter of Atlantic, IA; six great-grandchildren, ReAnn and Trey Cappel, Thomas Knight, Jessica Yacavonna, Amber Lynch and Skyler Robson; two great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
A visitation with family will be held at the Roland Funeral Home on Saturday, July 6 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. A private family committal service will be in held in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, IA.
