Obituary for Elizabeth M McCool

Elizabeth M. McCool, 84, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Elizabeth Mae was born on August 4, 1930, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of George and Ona (Vinson) Meckna. She attended South High in Omaha. Following high school she took time to travel the United States with friends.

Elizabeth met Marvin L. McCool in Omaha, Nebraska, and while dating they enjoyed boating and water skiing. On October 2, 1962, they were united in marriage in Avoca, Iowa. They lived in Avoca for a short time after their marriage, but also lived in Omaha, North Platte, and Lemars. In 1977, they made their home in Atlantic. She and Marvin looked forward to getting together with friends for a weekly game of Pinochle. Over the years she was a beautician, waitress, and was also a seamstress at DeLong’s in Atlantic.

She was always active in her church, which included teaching Sunday school and sewing book bags for underprivileged children in other countries. Elizabeth was currently a member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed bowling and eating out with family and friends. In her spare time she liked to sew everything from clothing to curtains. Her family was fond of her cooking, and will miss her broccoli and cheese casserole and candied apples. Elizabeth was always willing to help and always put other's needs before he own.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Marvin; daughters, Mary McCool of Atlantic, IA, and Linda (Rodney) Polacek of Shelby, IA; grandchildren, Kylee Wojciechowski, Olivia Petersen, Lance Buck and fiancé, Melinda Broadstreet, Jani Ring, and husband, Louis, and Paul Polacek; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kason, Cody, Summer, Joseph, Samantha, and Steven; and great-great-grandson, Lee.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Ona Meckna; brothers, George, Donald, and William Meckna; and sister, Betty George.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Atlantic, with Pastor Diane DeSmidt officiating.

Following the service cremation will take place and a burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 20, 2014, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.
