Obituary for Bertha Mae McAfee

Bertha Mae McAfee, 90, of Atlantic, passed away Monday February 9, 2009 at the Heritage House, where she had been a resident since August of 2008. The daughter of Louie and Christina Johnson, she was born on October 6, 1918 on a farm south of Casey and was raised in rural Casey and Anita. She attended Casey and Anita rural schools and graduated from Anita High School in 1936. She taught country school at Maple Grove south of Anita. She married Conrad McAfee on October 7, 1945 in Atlantic. After marriage they farmed south of Anita for one and a half years and then they moved to a farm south of Atlantic, where they lived until Conrad passed away in 1998. Bertha then moved to Atlantic. Bertha Mae was a member of Women"s Country Club and Retired Teachers Association. Bertha Mae enjoyed playing cards, socializing and watching basketball. Bertha Mae made afghans for all her children, grand children, and great-grandchildren. Surviving are Gerald and Janice McAfee of Audubon, Beverly and Jim Walter of Atlantic, and Eldon and Denise McAfee of Des Moines; grandchildren, Marcie and Jason Mulford, Clint and Cris McAfee, Matt McAfee; Tresa and Chad Comes, Justin and Megan Walter, Lindsay, Megan and Elisa McAfee; 11 great grandchildren; a brother Louie and wife Lillie Johnson and sister-in-law Marie Johnson and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Conrad; an infant daughter, Wanda; a brother, Walter Johnson, and sisters Amy Johnson, Ruby Warner, Viola Teaff, Veta Gress, and Lucille Glynn.Funeral InformationThere will be open visitation at Roland Funeral Home and the family will meet with friends at Rolands' on the evening of Wednesday February 11, from 6:00 to 8:00. The funeral will take place at 10:30 Thursday morning, February 12 at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Pastor Gary DeGeest of First United Methodist Church of Atlantic will officiate.
