Maxine Hagen passed away at the age of 92 on December 23, 2022, at the Heritage House in Atlantic surrounded by family.
Maxine, the youngest of three daughters of George Edward and Agatha Elizabeth (Feick) Bolz, was born December 13, 1930, in Eureka Township, Adair County, Iowa, and baptized as an infant in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. She attended the rural Eureka #9 school until it was closed, and then completed her junior high and high school education in the Fontanelle Public Schools. After graduation, she moved to Atlantic and was employed as a secretary in the DeKalb Seed Corn district office.
On September 27, 1953, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Hagen and to this union three children were born – Greg, Dianne and Sheri. The family lived in Atlantic until Bill’s work with Walnut Grove transferred them to Waverly and then Manchester, Iowa. They returned to Atlantic in 1970, and a year later Maxine began working as a secretary in the First United Methodist Church office until her retirement in December of 1996.
Her hobbies included reading, sewing, crocheting, crafting, crossword puzzles, and some painting. After Bill’s death in March of 1997, she spent a lot of time volunteering, including the CCMH Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters, Viola Doud and Ruby Anstey; and brother-in-law, Wayne Doud.
She is survived by her son, Greg and wife Pattie Phillips of Tucson, AZ; daughters, Dianne and husband Doug Barker of Tempe, AZ and Sheri and husband Mike Raab of Boone, IA; five grand-daughters, Kristen Massirer and boyfriend Ryan Meyer of Tucson, Randi Hagen and boyfriend Mike Miller of San Tan Valley, Kaurtney and husband Dallin Slade of Mesa, Beth and husband Cody Bowers of Boone and Katie and husband Devin Madsen of Cedar Rapids; great-grandchildren, Kaylin, Leslie and Samuel Slade of Mesa; brother-in-law, Charles Anstey of Massena; and nieces and their families, Carolyn and husband Bill Boss of Clive, Cindy Anstey and boyfriend Jeff Toppin of Massena, Kathy and husband Dan Ankenbauer of Massena and Deb and husband Brett Brown of rural Anita.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Lewis, following a luncheon in the church fellowship hall. Visitation with the family present will be held prior to the service at the church on Wednesday, starting at 9:30 a.m.
