Ferne Matthews

Ferne V. (Kohl) Meyer Matthews, 98, of Atlantic, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2001, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.The daughter of John and Gertrude (Dressler) Kohl, Ferne was born January 17, 1903 north of Atlantic where she grew up, graduated from Atlantic High School, and continued with normal training. She first taught school in Waterloo, Iowa. Ferne married Fred Meyer on March 12, 1923 northeast of Atlantic. They were married for 61 years and farmed east of Lyman. Her marriage to Elbert Matthews took place January 6, 1989 in Atlantic. Ferne accepted the Lord as her own personal savior at an early age and lived her entire life for him.Surviving are one son, Gordon (Skip) Meyer and his wife Violet of Grant, Iowa; four grandchildren, Randy Meyer and his wife Cheryl of Millard, Nebraska, Duane Meyer and his wife Monna of Lohrville, Iowa, Suzanne Meyer and Ruth Meyer of Atlantic; four great grandsons, Nick Lewis and Chadwick Meyer of Lohrville, Iowa and Dustin and Jess Meyer of Millard, Nebraska; one sister, Helen Baird of Red Lion, Pennsylvania; her stepson, Richard Matthews and his wife Mary of Hayward, California; and a number of nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Fred, December 12, 1987; her second husband, Elbert, July 12, 1994; and one sister, Gladys Zahler.Funeral InformationServices for Ferne are scheduled for Monday, September 10, 2001, at 10:30 AM at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa with Milo Vande Krol of Oskaloosa, Iowa officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa.
