Bernice Matthews

Bernice Elinora Matthews, 93, formerly of Atlantic, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015, in Loveland, Colorado.

Bernice was born in Audubon County, Iowa on September 27, 1921 to Hans T. and Yorgine P. (Jorgensen) Petersen. Bernice attended rural schools in the area, graduated from Marne Secondary in 1937, and Atlantic High School in 1939. Soon after, she married Elmer E. Matthews on May 20, 1939. Bernice spent her life as a homemaker where she was well known for her love of raising her boys, baking and cooking.

Bernice also loved her various vegetable and flower gardens, traveling and spending time with her family members. She was a member of Elks Club Does and Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her brother, Don Peterson of Fort Collins, Colorado; two sons, Don W. (Mary) Matthews of Maryville, Missouri; Robert E. (Joyce) Matthews of Fort Collins, Colorado; and her beloved niece, Donna Karwal of Atlantic, Iowa. Bernice has four grandchildren, Christie (Chris) Allen of Monument, Colorado; Michael J. Matthews of Harker Heights, Texas; Kari (Matt) Mendenhall of Thornton, Colorado; and Susanne (Timothy) Trujillo of Fort Collins, Colorado. She also has five great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Erma Paulsen; a brother, Floyd Petersen; and her husband, Elmer.

A funeral service will be held on May 13, 2:00 pm at Roland Funeral Home, with Pastor Grant Van Lishout, officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. A reception will follow at Rolands'.

The family suggests that memorials be made to a Hospice organization of your choice.
