Mary Arlene Shaver

Mary Arlene Shaver, 96, of Atlantic, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 9th, 2022, at Atlantic Specialty Care.

She was the 2nd daughter of Robert A. and Amy Marie (Holaday) Shaver. She was born on January 19th, 1926, on a farm 4 and a 1/2 miles north of Massena, on Highway 148. Arlene attended Violet Hill School in Lincoln township #9 through the 8th grade. She then went on to graduate from the Cumberland High School in 1944.

Arlene taught rural school from 1944 to 1953 in Adair County Summit #3 and Cass County Whitneyville #3. In 1953, she made Atlantic home and was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator.  In 1982, she retired from the telephone company after working there for 29 years and 2 months. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneer Club 71.

In August of 1966, she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was a member of the Pinegrove Methodist Church north of Massena until 1970. She was baptized by immersing at the Gospel Chapel in Atlantic and became a member of the Emmanuel Baptist church then later the Evangelical Free Church when the two merged in 1987.  She served as a pianist, Sunday school teacher, church librarian and singer. She was a member and served as president of the Women's Ministries from 1988 to 1989.

She also served as president of the Nishna Valley Art Club for 7 years. She had many interests. Among them, oil & acrylic painting, writing poetry, reading, crocheting and she was a member of the Iowa Artist and Area Writers and Artists for many years.

Arlene is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Virginia Christensen and Marjorie Bell; and brother, Lyle Shaver.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Inurnment will be held at the Massena Center Cemetery north of Massena at a later date.
