John Marxen Jr.

John Henry (Bud) Marxen, Jr., 80, of Atlantic, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2001, at his home.The son of John Henry, Sr, and Lola Mae (DeBord)Marxen, John was born July 17, 1921 on the Kitrick farm two miles west of Atlantic on Second Street and grew up on farms in the Marne and Atlantic areas. He was united in marriage to Helen Maxine Bornholdt on March 2, 1946 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic. Following marriage they farmed from 1946 to 1957. He sold Wilson seed corn and standard chemicals. John was then manager of Joyce Lumber Yard, joining the police force in 1960. He attended the Policy Academy in 1962 and served twenty-three years as a policeman, part of that time as Chief of Police, retiring in May of 1983. He was a member of Odd Fellows, Iowa Association of Chief of Police and Peace Officers, and Iowa State Policemen's Association. After retiring, he enjoyed dealing in coins, auctions and flea markets.Surviving are his wife Helen M. Marxen of Atlantic; three daughters, Leanne Silence, Patty Marxen and Jane Livingston and husband Glenn, all of Atlantic; seven grandchildren, Sheri Ashburn and friend Don Wilson, John Silence and wife Lisa, Angela Behrens and husband Jim, all of Atlantic, Chad Silence and wife Jo of Des Moines, Teri Silence, Jodi Woodard and husband Craig, all of Atlantic and Jessica Wolfe of Des Moines; fifteen great-grandchildren, Kayla , Acacia, Corey, Brooke, Jacob, Tyler, Nicholas, Kaitlin, Natalie, Emily, Patrick, Jackson, Kirstin, Caleb and Brandon; one brother Ralph Marxen and wife Linda of Fayetteville, North Carolina; two sisters, Mickey Bornholdt and Shirley McFadden and husband Wayne and numerous other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lola Marxen and one great-grandson Corbin.Funeral InformationServices for John will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2001, at 10:30 A.M. at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa with Rev. Chuck Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
