Obituary for Florence Elizabeth Martens

Florence Elizabeth Martens, 88, formally of the Lyman area, passed away Thursday evening, January 18, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak, Iowa where she had been a resident.The daughter of Henry Franklin and Alice Deanne Carroll Askey, Florence was born September 28, 1912, in Red Oak. Her family moved to Grant where she grew up and attended Grant Schools. She was united in marriage to Hans John Martens on March 12, 1931, at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Noble Township. Following marriage they farmed east of Lyman in Noble Township until retiring in 1968. Florence entered the Griswold Care Center in 1997 for three and one half years before moving to the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak where she passed away. Florence was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ south of Lyman and was active in women's fellowship and quilting.Surviving are one daughter, Marjorie Miller and her husband, James, of Red Oak; one son, Bernard A. Martens and his wife LaVern, of Lyman; seven grandchildren, Michelle Morton and her husband, Charles, of Des Moines, Michael Miller and his wife, Stephanie, of Audubon, Martin Miller and his wife, Delia, of Chino, California, Rebecca Peterson and her husband, Stephen, of Stanton, Tony Martins and his wife, Kelly, of Atlantic, Todd Martin and his wife, Michelle, of Griswold, and Terry Martens of Mt. Ayr; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister Mildred Kennon, and her husband, Maurice, of Stanton; and a number of nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hans, May 29, 1974; and two sisters, Mary Nielsen and Ruth Eshelman.Roland Funeral Service -- Atlantic, IowaFuneral InformationServices for Florence were held Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at 10:30 AM at the St. John's United Church of Christ south of Lyman, Iowa with Pastor Jim Hansen officiating.Interment was in the Weirich Cemetery southwest of Lyman, Iowa.
