Obituary for Bernice H. Martens

BERNICE HAZEL MARTENS Bernice Hazel Martens, 87, a long time resident of Omaha, Nebraska and Cumberland, Iowa passed on to be with her Lord on the morning of January 8, 2008 at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa. Bernice was born February 15, 1920, the daughter of Henry H. and Cora Mae (Nettz) Martens east of Lyman, Iowa. She was a graduate of the Griswold Iowa Public School. She taught at Pringey Country School located two miles east of Lyman in 1942 and then attended Iowa State Teacher"s College in Cedar Falls Iowa. She completed her training as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Mercy College of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. She then spent many years working in Cherokee, IA, Methodist"s Children"s Hospital in Omaha, NE, Job Corp in Omaha NE, and University Hospital in Omaha, NE. Bernice enjoyed being around people. She enjoyed and helped plan Atlantic Christian Women"s Club meetings, attended Senior Haven Activities in Cumberland, was a member of the Site Counsel, volunteered as a reading and math tutor in the C&M Grade School, and was an avid reader of magazines and books of all types. She is survived by a sister, Isabelle Evans of Council Bluffs, IA; nieces and nephews, Holly Meyer and husband David of Cumberland, IA; Vicki Hicks and her husband George of Atlanta, GA; Kent Martens of Omaha, NE, Roxann de Huelbes of Chicago, IL, Neal Evans and wife, Geri of Council Bluffs, IA, Roger Martens and wife Barbara of Missoula, Montana, David Martens and wife Kris of Havre, Montana, Shelley Miller and husband Marvin of Dayton, Ohio, Larry Martens and wife Carolyn of Omaha, NE, Gary Martens of Omaha, Beverly Harris of Omaha, NE, Ruth Wynn and husband Jim of Omaha, NE, Wanda Fausett and husband Ottis of Omaha, NE, Peggy Spittler and husband Don of Omaha, NE and Betty Thomas of Omaha, NE; and a sister-in-law, Sylvia May of Cumberland, IA. Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Cora Martens; four brothers, Jeff, Jesse, Earl, and Joel Martens; a nephew, Jimmie Lee Evans; a brother-in-law, Wilbur Evans; and a nephew-in-law, Bill Harris.Funeral InformationA memorial will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday, February 15 at the Gospel Chapel in Atlantic. Pastor Mike Eells will bring a gospel message and David Meyer and Bill Meyer will take part in the service. Bernice"s family invites relatives and friends to join them for refreshments following the memorial.
