Marilyn Mundorf

Marilyn Mundorf, 88, of Lewis, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.

Marilyn, who lived in Lewis most of her life, was born on August 14, 1934, in Iowa City and was the only child of Albert and Ella Bees.  She attended school in Lewis and graduated in 1952. Following graduation, she attended business school in Omaha, and worked as a secretary there for a year. Marilyn was married to John Logan Mundorf on April 18, 1954, Easter Sunday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa.  She was a farm wife for a number of years until Marilyn began working for an organization that was hired to plan and build the Atlantic Hospital.  She also began taking classes to prepare her for the rest of her career as the Director of Medical Records and Quality Assurance.  She held that position for 32 years, earning a state award for her work in Quality Assurance in 1998.  After retiring from that position, she went back to work as a medical transcriptionist for 13 more years.

After John’s death, she kept busy with volunteering work in Lewis.  She was the chairman of the Lewis Community Improvement Committee for 15 years; served on the building committee for the new Public Library; and served two terms on the Lewis City Council.  Marilyn’s life was brightened by five daughters, 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  She loved attending as many sports and activities of the grandchildren as she could.  They were avid Hawkeye fans and attended their football games for many years, including several bowl games.  Marilyn also loved basketball and didn’t miss the Hawkeye games on TV.  She would loudly cheer for them as if she were there.  She even played Granny Basketball in her 70s!  She was very active in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, holding leadership roles, giving many speeches and presentations.  She belonged to the local Red Hat society and enjoyed their monthly outings. She also enjoyed playing cards and going to breakfast with her many friends.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Dean and husband, Byron, of Griswold, IA, Julie Westphalen and husband, Scott, of Brayton, IA, Jan Anderson and husband, Scott, of Lewis, IA, Jamie Juhl and husband, Richard, of Lewis, IA, Jeanene Christian and husband, Steve, of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren, Heather Dollen and husband, Todd, of Elliott, IA, Becky Brockman, of Elliott, IA, Samantha Schwenneker and husband, Brent, of Adel, IA, Michael Anderson and wife, Aimee, of Villisca, IA, Kayleigh Juhl, of San Diego, CA, Kasey Juhl and wife, Michaelin, of Atlantic, IA, Hannah Micek and husband Jack of Omaha, NE, and Emma Christian of Omaha, NE; 13 great grandchildren and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
