Obituary for Wavie Ellen Long

WAVIE ELLEN LONG Wavie Ellen Long, 97, a long time resident of Atlantic, Iowa passed away Tuesday evening, April 14, 2009, at the Heritage House in Atlantic. Wavie was born to Claude M. and Mary (West) Miller on April 2, 1912 at Ticonic, Iowa. She attended school at Otto, Iowa graduating with the class of 1929. Wavie attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls over a span of ten years alternating courses with teaching in country schools to earn tuition. She was married to Dr. L. L. Long from 1940 through 1956. She taught at the Pratt School in Omaha, NE. After moving to Atlantic, Wavie taught at the Jackson, Lincoln and Washington schools in Atlantic and also taught special education in the Lincoln school and in Lewis, Iowa. She taught for over 40 years retiring in 1977. Wavie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, a 50 year member of the Eastern Star, A.A.U.W., a volunteer for the Cass County Memorial Hospital, participated in activities at the Y.M.C.A., enjoyed gardening and watching sporting events. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen Dargin and husband Larry of Minden, Iowa; a son, Owen Dean Long and partner Patricia Hough of Brooklyn, New York; and daughter, Linda Lou Johnson and husband Kevin of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; grandchildren, Catherine Dargin and husband Dave Cawthorn of Omaha, Nebraska; Sandra Stewart and husband Chris of Pikeville, North Carolina; Max Rosen-Long and Kyle Rosen-Long of Brooklyn, New York; great-grandchildren, Wiley, Cyrus and Milo Stewart all of Pikesville, North Carolina; many nieces and nephews. Wavie is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Kenneth, Clarence, Lawrence, Wayne Miller and their wives; a granddaughter, Amy Dargin.Funeral Information There will be open visitation at the Roland Funeral Home daily from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. and a visitation with family present on Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00. Services for Wavie will be held Saturday morning, April 18, at 10:30 at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic with Pastor Gary DeGeest officiating with a lunch following at the church fellowship hall.
