Linda Mae Herman, 82, of Atlantic, Iowa, went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Monday, April 22, 2024, at Heritage House in Atlantic.
She was born on March 19, 1942, at her Grandpa and Grandma’s home in Shelby County, Iowa as the eldest of six children to Belmond and Theresa (Olsen) Nissen. She and her siblings attended Jackson #6, Country School, and later graduated from Elk Horn High School in Elk Horn, Iowa. In her youth she learned the valuable skill of baking with one of her best friends, Joyce, while in 4H and in their mothers’ pantries. Linda worked at her Uncle Raymond’s Produce candling eggs and at the Elk Horn Locker in the late 1950’s. The family moved around Southwest Iowa until settling in Atlantic where she met Harold Herman while attending the Immanuel Baptist Church in Atlantic, now GracePoint Church. One year later she and Harold were wed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton on September 22, 1977.
She raised her children while being employed as a “caregiver” before there was a certification for a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). After becoming a CNA, Linda would go on to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) while working at Cass County Hospital, Atlantic Care Center and Heritage House. She retired from Heritage House after 28 years.
Linda’s life was as a caregiver, not only to her patients and residents, but also to her children and friends. She had an easy going, kind, sweet heart that showed in her frequent acts of generosity to those she encountered. She had numerous hobbies including making porcelain dolls, sewing cross stitch, and being active in the Cass County Genealogical Society. Above all, Linda would say her favorite moments in life were raising and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandson Chet, and Zippy the cat.
Linda is survived by her children, Mary (Clark) Johnson of Griswold, Iowa and Gary (Jodi) Vargas of Tyler, Texas; grandchildren, Chad (Heidi Winger) Johnson of Atlantic and Matt (Amanda) Johnson of Scribner, Nebraska; great grandson, Chet Johnson of Scribner; siblings, Doris Olson of Leon, Iowa, Terri (Dave) Wilson of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Allan (Julie) Nissen of Exira, Iowa; aunt, Elna Nissen; cousins, Jerry (Sherri) Nissen, Diane (Rick) Nielsen, and Daryl (Tammy) Nissen; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Herman; parents, Belmond and Theresa Nissen; son, Ron Vargas; sister, Joanne Filsinger (3-29-2024); brother, Keith Nissen; nephew, Brian Nelson; and brothers-in-law, Danny Olson, Rocky Martin and Mick Filsinger, .
