Obituary for Duane Liddell

Duane E. Liddell, 83, a life-long resident of the Griswold and Grant area, passed away Monday, February 12, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society in Villisca.

Duane Eldon Liddell, the son of James Audrey and Margaret Ellen (Coulthard) Liddell, was born on January 13, 1935, at home in Fremont County. The family farmed at many different locations in southwest Iowa until 1941. His father purchased a farm in the Griswold area where Duane went to country school. Duane attended high school in Griswold, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, and was honorably discharged in 1957. He then returned to the family farm and worked for his father before starting a venture of his own.

On May 27, 1954, he was united in marriage to Norma England at the Noble Center Methodist Church, near Lyman. Four children were born from this union: Eldon Michael, Cynthia Marie, Linda Sue and Stephanie Elaine.

Duane had many passions in life, but enjoyed feeding cattle and attending tractor pulls, far and wide. He had a true love of owning and operating farm machinery (preferably of the red color). He enjoyed mowing the grass, “oh” how he loved to mow. He also loved spending time with grandchildren. There were many Sunday afternoons when he would gather up the kids and head to the local swimming pool, making sure to stop and enjoy a Dairy Queen before heading home.

He is preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Shelby and Maxine England; brother, Russel Liddell; brothers-in-law, Boyd Dolch and Marion Houser; sisters-in-law, Janet Dolch and Sherry England; and niece, Kathy Houser.

Duane is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma of Grant; children, Eldon and Anita Liddell of Corning, Cynthia and Bill Swain of Lyman, Linda and Galen Kreps of Bedford, and Stephanie and Chris Witzman of Atlantic; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Jean Houser and Marilyn Brunk, both of Griswold.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Roland Funeral Home. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to the service starting at 1:00 p.m.

Burial will be held at a later date at Noble Center Cemetery, south of Lyman.
