Virgil Dwayne Lembke
Virgil Dwayne Lembke, 88, of Cumberland, Iowa, passed away Friday, November 2, 2001, at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa.The son of George Edward and Ethel Esther (Palmer) Lembke, Virgil was born on January 11, 1913 in Griswold, Iowa. He was raised in the Griswold, east Pottawattamie County, area. He was married to Helen Wagner on February 24, 1934 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Virgil and Helen were blessed with one child, Connie Lou. Virgil moved his family into the Cumberland, Cass County, area in March of 1939 where he farmed for awhile before accepting employment with Standard Oil as a bulk station agent. He worked for Standard Oil for 20 years. After leaving the oil business, he and Helen operated a seed and feed business on main street for 12 years. When he left this business he retired to a shop that he built in his garage and there he spent many hours sharpening tools and restoring antique furniture. He also enjoyed golfing. Virgil and Helen also had the good fortune to do some traveling, both abroad and at home. Over the years he was active in civic and community affairs serving on the Cumberland Town Council and the School Board. He was an active member of the Cumberland United Methodist Church, 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and Lion's Club, having held offices in each. Virgil was also on the Nishna Valley Recreation Area Board at Griswold. He was especially active in the emplementation and promotion of both the Senior Citizen's Apartment Complex and the Senior Citizen Center meal site in Cumberland. He served as a manger for the Senior Apartment complex for a number of years. Surviving are his wife Helen; his daughter Connie Hunget and husband Phil of Corwith, Iowa; two grandsons, Todd Hunget and wife Pam of Mitchellville, Iowa and Grand Hunget of Kansas City, Missouri; three great-granddaughters, Keely Hunget, Carly Hunget and Danielle Di Carlo; a brother Doyle Lembke and wife Barbara of Carson, Iowa; two sisters, Dorothy Liddell and husband Virgil of Harlan, Iowa and Charlotte Woods and husband Paul of Emerson, Iowa; a sister-in-law Shirley Lembke of Bodfish, California; three brothers-in-law, Harold Wagner and wife Lois of Atlantic, Herbert Wagner and wife Loretta of Atlantic and Glen Wagner of Griswold; many cousins, nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Ethel Lembke; four brothers, Dwight, Merly, Orland and Calvin; three sisters, Verda Clayton, Velda Williams and Dollie Hughes.Virgil prepared for this day by writing his own obiturary.Funeral InformationA memorial service will be held for Virgil on Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Cumberland, Iowa following the committal service which will be held at 10:00 AM at the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa. Rev. Robert Beard will officiate.
