Obituary for Helen Lembke

Helen Catherine Lembke, 93, of Cumberland, Iowa died on February 13, 2009 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa. The daughter of August William and Henrietta Anna Louise Dose Wagner, Helen was born on June 6, 1915 on a farm west of Griswold, Iowa. She was raised in the Griswold-Carson area. She was married to Virgil Lembke on February 24, 1934 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Helen and Virgil were blessed with one child, Connie Lou. The family moved to the Cumberland, Cass County area in March of 1939 where they farmed before moving into town when Connie was in third grade. Through the years Helen and Virgil owned and operated a restaurant, The Coffee Cup, in Cumberland and later, managed Malone's Kent Seed and Feed business. Virgil had a shop in their garage where, after retirement, Helen helped him restore antique furniture. Helen and Virgil enjoyed golfing. They belonged to the Nishna Valley Recreation Area at Griswold, Iowa. They also did some traveling, both at home and abroad. Over the years, Helen was an active member of the United Methodist Church and she was also actively involved in the Order of Eastern Star. Helen was always busy. She was a telephone operator, a 4-H leader, and a cook at the Cumberland School. She sold Avon and Minnesota Woolens and monuments for the Winterset Monument Company. One of Helen's and Virgil's very favorite pastimes was dancing. They went with friends to many different places in southwest Iowa. One of their favorite places was Peony Park in Omaha. Helen entered the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic in November 2005. Surviving are her daughter, Connie Hunget and her husband, Phil of Corwith, Iowa; two grandsons, Todd Hunget of Mitchellville, Iowa and Grant Hunget and his wife, Michelle, of Lenexa, Kansas; four great-grandchildren, Keely Hunget of Federal Heights, CO, Carly Hunget of Houston, TX and Steven and Mary Beth Duncan of Lenexa, KA. She is also survived by her brother Harold and his wife, Lois who reside in the Nursing and Rehab Center in Panora, IA; a sister-in-law, Loretta Wagner of Atlantic; a brother-in-law, Doyle Lembke and his wife, Barbara of Carson, IA; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Liddell of Harlan, IA Charlotte Woods of Emerson, IA Shirley Lembke of Golden Valley, AZ; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Virgil, two brothers, Glen and Herbert and a sister-in-law, Fern.Funeral InformationA Committal service will be held at 10 O'clock A.M. Wednesday, February 18 at the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic followed by a memorial service at 11 O'clock at the First United Methodist Church in Cumberland with the Reverend Dick Krambeck officiating.
