Obituary for
Grover R Lehmkuhl
Grover R. Lehmkuhl, 93, of Villisca, Iowa, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 9, 2014, in Villisca.
Grover Roy Lehmkuhl was born on March 12, 1921, in Noble Township, Cass County, Iowa, the son of Alvin John and Louise Dorothy (Wohlenhaus) Lehmkuhl. He attended country school and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1938. Following graduation he moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he worked at Social Security for two years. In 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in India for three years with the Army Signal Corp. While in India he translated Japanese code. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he lived in Kansas City, MO, where he received training on Morse Code.
On May 10, 1948, he married Martha Jane Lindeman, in the Cameo Room at Whitney Manor in Atlantic. On their 50th Anniversary they were able to gather with family and friends in the same room to celebrate.
After their marriage they moved to Le Mars, Iowa, where Grover worked 19 years for the Illinois Central Railroad as a telegrapher and ticket agent. Wanting to move back to their home area, they settled in Villisca where he owned and operated the Villisca Laundromat and Cleaners and was also an insurance agent. Grover retired in 1983.
Grover and Martha Jane enjoyed eating breakfast together, and it didn't have to be a certain place. He was a sports fanatic and loved to not only participate, but to watch his daughters and grandkids participate. The light of his life was to sit at the head of the dining room table with his family around him watching them interact with each other. He wasn't about to sit back, he wanted to be involved in whatever his family was involved in.
Grover is survived by his wife of 66 years, Martha Jane of Villisca, IA; daughters, Laurie (Mark) Goldapp of Red Oak, IA, and Amy (Jeff) Vanderhoof of Villisca, IA; grandchildren, Matthew (fiance, Jodi Vodicka) Goldapp of Council Bluffs, IA, Daniel Vanderhoof of Lincoln, NE, Lisa Vanderhoof of Corning, IA, and Jill and Scott Vanderhoof of Villisca, IA; great-grandchildren, Grace and Josie Goldapp and Emma and Mia Vodicka; sister, Iola Muller of Atlantic, IA; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline Schuler of Traverse City, MI, Grace (Verlain) Rathkamp of Lyman, IA, Lloyd "Bud" Lindeman of Atlantic, IA, and C. G. (Helen) Lindeman of Lyman, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother in infancy; brother, Harry (Dorothy) Lehmkuhl; sister, Lenora (Junior) Wohlenhaus; two nephews in infancy; brother-in-law, Kenneth Muller; father and mother-in-law, Calvin and Alma Lindeman, sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois (Harold) Wagner, Doris Jane Lindeman, Carol Lindeman, Betty (B.J.) Riley, Travis Martens and Murry Schuler; nephew, Alan Wagner; niece, Jo Marie Riley; nephew in infancy; and a niece in infancy.
