Alice B. Layland (McKibbin)
Alice (McKibbin) Layland, 96, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, with her family at her side.
She was born at home the daughter of Earl Charles and Lizzie Amelia (Christensen) McKibbin on October 28, 1922, where Bethany Farm Christian Camp is now located near Brayton, Iowa.
Alice lived near Exira, Iowa, except for eight years in California in the 1940’s until moving to Atlantic in 1973. She was a homemaker for many years, and then started waitressing at the Valley Restaurant. Alice later managed The Viking Restaurant until she retired to care for her parents.
Alice will be deeply missed by her daughter, Diane Berkley of Exira, IA; son, Dan Layland of Atlantic, IA; six grandchildren, Angela Pedersen of St. Paul, MN, Chris (Rosemary) Pedersen of Waukee, IA, Shannon (Katja) Layland of Jena, Germany, April (Stuart) Gelman of Overland Park, KS, Kaisha Kern of Atlantic, IA, and Hanna Layland of Atlantic, IA; ten great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Lizzie McKibbin; son, Deane Layland; and son-in-law, Tom Berkley.
Alice was a very special lady and touched many lives. She selflessly donated her body to the University of Iowa for research.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 19th at the Atlantic Cemetery.
In keeping with Alice’s simple ways, the family requests no flowers. Memorials will be given to Bethany Evangelical Free Church and the Bethany Farm Christian Camp.
