Obituary for Genevieve G. Lavett

Genevieve was born September 22, 1921 to Floyd and Eva McFadden who lived at Fletcher Corner outside Atlantic, IA on the family farm. She passed into the loving care of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday afternoon March 5, 2007 in Monterey, California, at the age of 85. She was blessed to grow up with wonderful parents, four sisters and two brothers, whom she called every Saturday on her cell phone. After growing up & working on the farm, she went to Peru state Teacher"s college to become a teacher. There she met William F. McNally who she married on November 25, 1943 in Atlantic, IA with Edwin McNally and Kathleen McFadden standing up for them. They lived in Atlantic, Blockton, Ashton, & Okoboji in Iowa, Randolph & Verdigre in Nebraska, & Greeley, CO before moving to Hayward, CA in 1958. She loved & supported Bill as he developed his career, and she raised their four boys and one girl. After her daughter Sheryl started school, Genevieve began her career as a teacher, and loved teaching reading to hundreds of first grade students at Harder Elementary school in Hayward, CA. After Bill died in 1973, she married one of his horse shoe pitching buddies, Fred "Flash&" Lavett on September 1, 1974 in Reno, NV & moved to Seaside, CA. Fred said Bill told him, "Nothing was too good for Genevieve,&" and he made that statement a living reality. Genevieve, being retired now, took up horse shoe pitching and won several times including the California State Senior Women"s title. She was later inducted into the World Horse Shoe Pitching Hall of Fame for all her accomplishments including inventing the score card used at most tournaments today. Fred also taught her to play cribbage, which she liked playing, especially with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Genevieve loved greatly, and was always there for her family: from baiting fishing poles for the kids, making baloney sandwiches on trips, getting the first bite off ice cream cones, supplying computers for grandkids, wheel chairs for siblings, helping with the canning and garden work, fixing food for holiday get-togethers, remembering names, dates, & phone numbers, to loaning what finances she could muster (and she did) for any reason you asked with no interest, & grace for times when you didn"t have the payment. Genevieve also loved to travel: Hawaii, to meet Dale on R&R from Vietnam; Germany with Paul to visit Manfred Moser & his family; Mexico, on a cruise with Sheryl & family, Japan, to take horse shoe pitching to a sister city; and wherever the World Horse Shoe Championship was held with Bill first, & then Fred. She also traveled every year back to the farm to be there for the McFadden family reunion & most holidays. Two amazing facts about Genevieve, which she reminded folks about, were the following: First – she had 1 boy (Larry) in 1963, 2 boys (Dale & Wayne) in 1964, & 3 boys (Everett, Paul & Manfred Moser) in 1965 graduate from Sunset High School in Hayward, CA (Sheryl graduated in 1971). Second – There were 7 Eagle Scouts in her immediate family…Bill, Larry, Dale, Paul, Sean, Elijah, & Dale. (Everett was a Life Scout). Genevieve"s love for her family started with her two husbands and carried right on throughout her life to her latest great-grandchild. Yes, cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law were all part of the family she loved, along with her husbands, kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. We will all miss her very much. Genevieve is survived by her husband Fred "Flash&" Lavett of Seaside, CA; son Larry McNally of Newark, CA; son Dale McNally & wife Sue of Richland, WA; son Paul "Mo&" McNally & wife Patsy of Vallejo, CA & former wife Gail of Vacaville, CA; son Everett McNally & wife Sol of Fairfield, CA; daughter Sheryl (McNally) Gravel & husband Everett "Ralph or Rocky&"; sister Kathleen McFadden of Atlantic, IA; sister Opal Frisbee of Adair, IA; brother Bruce McFadden & wife Helen of Council Bluffs, IA; brother Wayne McFadden & wife Shirley of Atlantic, IA; sister Donna Peterson of Alta, IA; sister Carolyn Sipes & husband Ken of Osceola, NE; brothers-in-law Wilbur "Webb&" McNally & wife Hazel of Norfolk, NE and C.
