Laura Jean Burg, 87, of Greenfield, formerly of Bridgewater, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at the Immanuel Fontenelle Home in Omaha, Nebraska.
Laura was born on August 2, 1934 to Ralph and Rose Cron of Lewis, Iowa, where they lived until moving to Bridgewater, Iowa, where she also attended public school. Laura loved farm life, playing outdoors, riding her horse, and helping her father with farm work. During one evening in town, a young man named Leroy Burg asked if she and her friend wanted a ride around the town square. After sitting next to him in his car that evening, she felt a spark, and went home and told her mother she met the man she was going to marry. Leroy and Laura were married on July 10th, 1952. After their wedding, they moved to Georgia while Leroy went to Army boot camp and later returned to Bridgewater, where they raised their children on their family farm and enjoyed 59 years of marriage together.
Laura had always wanted to be a mother, and she delighted in raising their seven children on the farm. When she wasn’t chasing kids around, she ran a kennel for over 50 years and always grew a huge garden. She stayed busy canning, crafting, sewing, and growing flowers. She cooked fantastic fried chicken, roasts, and beef stew dinners. She was also known for her peanut brittle, famous sugar cookies and many other foods. In many ways, food was her love language. She always made sure you left with a full belly. She loved filling her home with all her family during the holidays and made Easter egg hunts and Christmas dinners memorable and full of fun and laughter.
Her walls at home proudly displayed photos of all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Despite the large number of photos, she could name each face and prayed for them daily. Laura was also known for actively attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events on a regular basis and never missed a birthday call or birthday card. She was a faithful wife, mother and grandmother.
She recently said while reminiscing, “I always had my days full, and never got tired. It seemed life was worth living.” The joy, excitement and zeal she had for life came from her faith in Jesus Christ and the love she shared with others. As a member of the Catholic church, she knew her Creator personally and is now experiencing the fullness of His love eternally. She wanted everyone to know Him.
She is survived by her seven children, eighteen grandchildren, and twenty-nine great-grandchildren: Daniel (Rosanne) Burg and their children: Matthew (Heather) Burg, Bridget (Scott) Bear, Melissa (Nolan) Pierce, Ryan (Katie) Burg; Sheryl (Pat) Nichols and her children: Josh (Darci) Gettler, Brooke (Michael) Davis, Isaac (Jordan) Gettler; Kathryn (Jim) Bass and their children: Amanda (Matt) House, Heather (Chris) Farrand; Teresa (Duff) Jensen and their children: Sarah (Willy) Roberts, Dustin Jensen; Steven (Cindy) Burg and their children: Austin Burg, Amber (Zach) Schroeder; Michelle (Daniel) Jameson and their children, Travis (Rikki) Jameson, Trevor Jameson; and Kevin (Heather) Burg and their children: Kevin (Hillary) Engles, Kameron Burg (Brittni), Connor Burg (Chelsi); and other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Rose Cron; husband, Leroy Burg; two sons, Adam and Richard Burg; sisters, Esther Cron and Ruby Smith; son-in-law, Dennis Gettler; and great-granddaughter, Ava Farrand.
