Martin Lewis Key
IN MEMORYMartin L. Key, MD Dr. Martin L. Key, 67, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly March 21, 2011, at Cass County Memorial Hospital. The son of Melvin and Linda Key, Martin was born October 30, 1943, in Hamburg, Iowa. He was raised in Hamburg and Atlantic, graduating from Atlantic High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy. He was a missile fire control technician and achieved the rank of 2nd class petty officer prior to his discharge in 1964. After military service, he received Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Iowa. Martin married Carolyn J. Schwartz on December 28, 1963, in Atlantic. They resided in Virginia, Iowa City, South Carolina, Missouri, Nebraska, and Arkansas during Martin"s military service and medical training until moving back to Atlantic in 1981. After medical school, Martin completed an internship in South Carolina and was in general practice in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, for four years. He then completed a general surgery residency in Lincoln, Nebraska, and became a board certified general surgeon. Martin was a tireless surgeon practicing for more than 25 years before retiring in 2006.He was a member of The American College of Surgeons and The American College of Surgeons, Iowa Chapter. In 2003, he initiated the founding of Senior Alumni Scholarship Foundation, which solicited Atlantic High School graduates at their 40th high school reunion to provide scholarships for graduating Atlantic High School seniors. He was the original president of the board of directors of SASF and served as president until 2008 when he became the executive director. He spent many hours after retirement working on SASF activities.Martin enjoyed the practice of medicine, golf, his dogs, and reading. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Members of his family, who received his continuous support, are left with invaluable memories. Surviving are his wife Carolyn; two daughters: Shannon and husband Randy Rocha of Germantown, Tennessee, and Marla and husband Rob Stephens of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and one son: MacLane and wife Allison Key of Woodbridge, Virginia; his mother Linda Key; sisters Sheri Johnston and husband Bob, Mary Skoog and husband John, and Teri Key; brother Pat Key; five grandsons, Brandon and Chris Wilkins, Levi Butler, Ryan Smith, and Mason Rocha; one great-granddaughter Jillian Wilkins; sisters-in-law Jeanene Muller, Sue Hunt and husband Roger, Cathy Baggenstoss and husband Kevin, and Sonia Key; step-mother-in-law Mickey Schwartz; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Sean Scot, his father Melvin Key, his brother George Key, and his father and mother-in-law Dale and Thelma Schwartz. Funeral Information The family suggests that memorials be directed to Senior Alumni Scholarship Foundation (SASF), PO Box 205, Atlantic, IA 50022. There will be an open visitation daily to sign the register book for Martin. A visitation with the family will be held at Rolands, Friday, March 25th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A private funeral service will be held for the immediate family with interment in Atlantic Cemetery.
