Kevin Schlake, 65, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Thursday, December 5, 2024, at his home in Atlantic.
Kevin Eugene Schlake was born to Henry and Fern (Schmoldt) Schlake in Fremont, Nebraska, on March 12, 1959. At a young age his family moved to Atlantic where he attended Atlantic Community Schools, graduating in the Class of 1977. As many in the 70’s, Kevin lived life as a long haired, rock and roll loving young man.
In addition to opening his own shop he worked for a number of businesses in and around Atlantic, including, Deter Motors, Wede’s, Namanny’s and Sky Jack. For the last 18 years he dedicated himself day in and day out at Olsen’s Outdoor Power in Atlantic. In addition to working in the shop he also was the head of their towing service.
In the late 1970’s, he met Vicki Ask – O’Brien and after being apart for a number of years they reunited and married on May 28, 2016. Over time, he also gained the daughter he’d never had in Vicki’s daughter, Kira.
Kevin’s strong personality was radiant and when he entered a room, everyone knew it. He never shied away from trying something new, whether it be starting a new project, which he had plenty of, or starting his own DJ business, Dance to the Music which he operated for a total of 25 years, the last 9 with Vicki by his side. Kevin rooted for the Huskers, GO BIG RED…which made it a house divided with others cheering for the Hawkeyes.
He looked forward to spending time with his kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews and don’t forget the cats. If you were to ask Kevin what he was most proud of he would instantly say, “I am most proud of raising my three boys, Jeremy, Justin and Jacob.”
Kevin’s huge heart, generosity and overall goodness will be deeply missed by his wife, Vicki of Atlantic; sons, Jeremy (Chelle) Schlake, Justin (Mindy) Schlake, Jake (Amber) Schlake; daughter, Kira (Brett) Buscher; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Carol Schlake and her family; many beloved nieces and nephews; and many extended family, co-workers and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Fern Schlake and brother, Kelly Schlake.
Family will greet friends and relatives from 5-7 p.m. at a Celebration of Life Visitation on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Roland Funeral Home. Words of hope will be shared at 6 p.m. by Pastor Loren Christensen. A private family burial will take place at a later date in the Atlantic Cemetery.
