Obituary for
Richard P. "Dick" Kanning
Dick Kanning, 90, of Atlantic, passed away Wednesday, August 26, at Atlantic Nursing & Rehab Center.
Dick was born in the parsonage of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Friberg Township, Ottertail County, Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to Rev. William D. and Louise Nee Hackbarth Kanning, May 29, 1925. He was baptized on June 14, 1925. His sponsors were Mr. Dietrich (Richard) Kanning of LuVerne, Iowa, Mrs. Helen Nee Kanning Nahnsen of Churdan, Iowa and Mrs. Regina Ladwig of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Dick was instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, by his father, at Bethlehem Lutheran School, southeast of Annandale, Minnesota. He was confirmed on April 2, 1939, and given the memory verse, Isaiah 41:10, "Fear thou not, for I am with thee; yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." After graduation from Maple Lake Minnesota High School on June 3, 1943, Dick volunteered for the draft and was inducted into the Aviation Cadet Program. On October 29, 1945, he was honorably discharged from service. Returning to Howard Lake, Minnesota, he worked for Shepperd Motor Company. He then attended Concordia Teachers' College at Seward, Nebraska, obtaining an Emergency Teacher's Certificate and accepted the call of St. John's Lutheran School at Atwater, Minnesota, for one year. He also served as a councilor at Camp Menaga, Minnesota, for a summer. Dick then moved to Audubon, Iowa, where his dad was the pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Rural Audubon. He attended one semester at Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, Iowa, then went to work at a number of garages and businesses. He married Leola Mae David on October 7, 1951. This marriage was blessed with three children, Rebecca Ann, Richard Dwight & David Allen. He retired from American Building Company in 1987 and enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling and wood working. They had lived at 1110 Cedar Street for 45 years and then moved to 1403 Lincoln Drive.
He is survived by his wife, Leola; his three children, Rebecca Ann and her husband, Chi Leung of Des Moines, IA; Richard and his wife, Teresa of Atlantic, IA and David and his wife, Susan Tierney-Kanning of Olathe, KS; his ten grandchildren, Gary (Mellisa) Knapp of San Antonio, TX, Sarah (Hassan) Serrar of Denver, CO, Kristy Knapp of Des Moines, IA, Joshua (Melissa) Knapp of Creston, IA, Lisa (Chris) Adams of Madison, WI, Rick (Lora) Kanning of Anita, IA, Justin (Kait) Tierney-Kanning of Olathe, KS, Joe Tierney-Kanning of Lawrence, KS, Travis Tierney-Kanning stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, Washington D.C., Logan Tierney-Kanning of Lawrence, KS; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth (Robert) Hansen of Manning, IA; and one sister-in-law, Verna (Jim) White of Duncan, OK; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. William D. and Louise Kanning; parents-in-law, Emil and Lena David; one brother, William and wife, Bonnie Kanning.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31, 10:30 a.m., in the Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Ken Davidson officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
Open visitation will be available from 9 to noon, Saturday, August 29, and from 1-4 Sunday afternoon, August 30. Family will meet with friends and relatives, from 4-6 p.m., Sunday evening.
