Lela Judd

Lela A. Judd, 100, of Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Atlantic, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines.

Lela was born January 19, 1916, the daughter of Edward Dennis and Emily Gertrude (Horton) Weatherby near Anita, Iowa. She attended Anita Community Schools, and after her schooling she moved to Atlantic and was employed at various jobs.

On August 1, 1936, she was united in marriage to Kenneth M. Judd . They celebrated 59 years of marriage the year Kenneth passed away. The couple lived in Atlantic, but moved to Perryville, Missouri for a short time until returning back to Atlantic. Lela was a homemaker taking care of her family who meant the world to her. In 2010, she moved to Wesley Acres in Des Moines.

Lela was a member of the United Church of Christ in Anita and Atlantic, and she believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking, and tending to her large flower garden. Lela looked forward to watching her favorite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals, on T.V. Family was everything to her, and she loved spending as much time together with them as possible.

Lela is survived by her children: Ruth Nelson of West Des Moines, Iowa, Ken (Marilyn) Judd of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; her grandchildren: Brian (Kelli) Nelson of Shawnee, Kansas, Janet Nelson of West Des Moines, Steven (Natalie) Judd of New Haven, Connecticut, Alan (Sue) Rice of Griswold, Iowa, Sheri (Kevin) Smith of Neola, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Lisa (Justin) Howell of Bonner Springs, Kansas, Matthew Nelson of Kansas City, Missouri, David Judd and Matthew Judd both of New Haven, Karly Smith and Kaleb Smith both of Neola; her two great great grandsons: Landon Howell and Jaxon Howell both of Bonner Springs; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Judd; her daughter Irene (Jerry) Rice; her parents; her brothers and sister: Harvey Weatherby, Alene "Bea" (Ivan) Shearman, Clyde Weatherby, Floyd (Evada) Weatherby; and her niece Norma Jean Weatherby.

Open visitation will be held on Friday, January 20th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Roland Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service on Saturday, January 21st beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 21st at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Wesley Acres Assisted Living, 3520 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 500312.
