Obituary for Frank Edward Jones

Frank Edward Jones, 83, of Atlantic, Iowa, died suddenly in his garden at home on March 31, 2010. Frank E. Jones was born on April 29, 1926, west of Atlantic, Iowa, the son of John E. and Christina (Knop) Jones. He was baptized on July 25, 1926 and confirmed on April 6, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church, 69 years ago. He first attended country school and then graduated with the Atlantic High School Class of 1943. As a teenager, Frank exhibited livestock at Cass County Fair, Aksarben and Kansas City. He often told about attending the National 4-H Convention in Chicago. At 22 years old, he met a young lady from Avoca at the local skating rink by the name of Darlene Osborn. On June 1, 1949, Frank and Darlene were married at her parents" home near Avoca. They were blessed with five children - three daughters and two sons. The hardest day in his life came on January 25, 1974, when he found his daughter, Sherry, as she had just died in an auto accident west of Griswold. In the early 1980"s, he fought throat cancer and won the battle. Frank was so thrilled to have his brother Glenn and his family come from Spain last June to help him and Darlene celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Frank and Darlene started their farming career west of Atlantic. They also farmed land north of Lewis and southeast of Griswold. In 1963, they purchased a farm west of Griswold. He raised hogs, cattle and chickens along with row crops and hay. Even after he and Darlene retired to their home in Atlantic, he still went back to the farm every year to help with the planting and harvesting. Frank was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic where he served as an elder and was a member of the Men"s Club. He and Darlene were also members of Faith Lutheran Church while they lived near Griswold. Frank was also a former member of the Griswold School Board and served several years on the East Pottawattamie ASCS County Committee. Frank sold DeKalb seed corn for many years. He really enjoyed going to antique tractor shows and visiting with old friends and new friends about days gone by. Other hobbies included traveling, working in the yard and garden, playing cards, watching Darlene cook and babysitting grandkids.
